Richard came to Baltimore in 1961 to teach high school art. He received an MFA at MICA in 1969. In 1970, he became head of the sculpture department at Catonsville Community College and was one of a group of artists considered outstanding in their field.
As a 7-year-old, he worked in his father’s hardware store and became fascinated by industrial materials. "I even started a crafts club for neighborhood kids. We made all kinds of stuff."
He has worked in all media, with recent work focusing on the industrial parts of Baltimore City, past and present. Many of the images deal with decay, the passing of time, rust, and the combination that appears when nature takes over.
"I like constructing with wood, incorporating objects, man-made, found, and natural. These constructions are painted to give the impression of metal. What inspires me is Asian Art, more so now as I pare things down to make a simpler image with impact."
