Ruth Becker

Ruth is a multidisciplinary artist, best known for her layered paper artworks. Her style and technique are rooted in contemporary Jewish folk-craft: She began cutting paper as a teen and later established her practice designing ketubahs (Jewish wedding art,) creating over 2,000 works for couples worldwide. Her studio work also includes abstract and landscape painting, graphic design, collage, and, most recently, mixed media work in layered, painted plywood.

Like her art practice, Ruth’s educational background is cross-disciplinary: She studied at UC Berkeley and Columbia University, earning degrees in rhetoric and law, as well as at Tel Aviv University as a Fulbright fellow.

Recent exhibitions include Long View Gallery’s annual New Year/New Artists show in Washington DC, the Creative Crafts Council’s Biennial Fine Crafts at Strathmore Mansion, where Ruth’s work won first place in the Mixed Media category, and Radically Amazed, an exhibition of contemporary Jewish artists at the Bender JCC in Rockville, Maryland.

Ruth has also exhibits at regional juried art festivals, including the Tephra ICA Arts Festival in Reston, VA and the Armonk Art Show in Westchester County, New York. At this year’s Bethesda Fine Arts Festival, Ruth’s work was awarded Best in Show, and at the recent Bethesda Row Art Festival, Ruth won first place for mixed media and second place overall.

Ruth lives and works in Chevy Chase, Maryland, recently returned to the area after many years abroad. She is represented by Long View Gallery in Washington DC.
