Andrew Nelson

Andrew Nelson is a painter born in Baltimore, MD. In the time since starting his career in 2021, he has held studios in Brooklyn and London, as well as maintaining a practice in Baltimore (Mill Centre). His works have been shown at Maryland Art Place and Chesapeake Gallery, in addition to his self-curated exhibition at 10Ten Studios in New York.

Andrew’s practice draws on landscape, figuration, and architecture to render spaces which explore mood, psychological states, and the nature of perception. These paintings interchangeably employ flat colors, open planes, and shifts in perspective in their exploration of these themes. A painter with a background in both realism and in design, Andrew works from his photography and imagination to arrive at visual compositions which take inspiration from expressionism, surrealism, fauvism, and nature.

Andrew got his start in painting through early education in observational painting and drawing at Gilman School, supplemented with courses from the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Schuler School. Later, as an art major at Yale, he continued painting classes, receiving instruction from practicing-artist professors.

Eventually, Andrew shifted into a professional design career which culminated in a five year stint in Silicon Valley. Then, amid the pandemic in 2021, he started the shift back to his painting roots. As his artistic practice develops, his exposure to other fields and design sensibilities bring new life to his work – even as his sensitivity to mood, color, and environment have remained constant.
