Woodworking with Tom

Tom Parmelee is our Barn Manager. He was born in Minnesota and has lived in Chicago, Singapore, and North Idaho, where he ran his own cabinet and custom furniture shop. He recently moved to the Maryland area for the great schools for his daughter. Tom teaches beginner to intermediate woodworking classes, and he can also help you plan a private woodworking class or party.

Woodworking 101

Learn the basics of woodworking safety and tools. Walk away with a serving platter or custom clipboard!

Wall Mounted Coat Rack

Make your own wooden coat rack. Great for beginners or anyone looking to learn about wall mounted furniture.

Cutting Boards

In this two part class, participants will make their own cutting boards to use in their homes. Students will learn about different species of woods to use for food safe projects, how to join pieces of wood together, and different oils for sealing them.

Joe Merrey specializes in the craft of woodworking and teaching traditional hand tools. He runs his own business, Merreyman Custom Woodcraft.

Introduction to Hand Tool Woodworking

Students will delve into the fundamentals of craftmanship, focusing on the mastery of hand planes, chisels, hand saws, and various hand tool woodworking techniques.

Introduction to Dovetails

Learn how to cut dovetails by hand. In this class you will learn one of the most essential and daunting furniture joints—the dovetail. *Requires Intro to Hand Tools or prior knowledge of hand tool use.

Intro to Hand-Cut Mortise & Tenon Joinery

Learn how to craft a strong mortise and tenon joint using only hand tools. This hands-on class covers layout, sawing, chiseling and fitting techniques with chisels, mallets, marketing gauges and hand saws.*Requires Intro to Hand Tools or prior knowledge of hand tool use.

Welding with Michael Guarraia

Michael Guarraia has over 20 years of experience welding. He operates his small business, MG Custom Lighting, where he repurposes old car parts into lamps. Michael also teaches beginner coding with Arduino!

Beginner Welding: Bird or Dragonfly

Learn the basics of Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding in this make-and-take class where you'll fabricate either a bird or dragonfly out of common kitchen utensils. Topics include welding safety, equipment, processes, technique, and basic metallurgical properties. No experience necessary, and suitable for anyone age 12 and older.

Parent/Child Welding 10+

Interested in some parent/child “bonding” time? Create a metal sculpture with your child!

Intermediate Welding

Extend the skills you learned in the beginner class by making more utensil-animals! You’ll likely be able to make two or three new animals in this class. All materials included, and we’ll talk a little more about the voltage and wire-feed settings of the machine, as well as how to set it up, and how to break it down. *Prerequisite: Beginner Welding.
